Morley Nolo mortem peccatoris or YouTube SATB
From Tristitiae Remedium (A remedy for sadness) of 1616. This lovely macaronic (alternating language) piece is technically a carol. The text is attributed to John Redford, with the Latin title taken from the Rule of St Benedict.
Byrd Though Amaryllis dance in green or YouTube Also in the Oxford Book of English Madrigals SAATB
This pastoral comes from the 1588 collection of adapted consort songs Psalmes, Sonets and Songs of Sadnes and Pietie and is a cautionary tale of love and marriage set as a riotous dance to a light but intricate five-part texture. Despite temptation, the poet resolves at the end of each verse 'chill love no more'. Byrd showed little interest in the madrigal but succeeded in cultivating secular vocal music in an impressive variety of forms; his pupil, Thomas Morley, championed the form.
Tomkins Adieu ye city-prisoning towers or YouTube Also in the Oxford Book of English Madrigals SSATB
Continued from January. Adieu, ye city-prisoning towers is a 5-part comparison of town and country life. It demonstrates a typical florid spring, with some wonderful word-painting of singing and chirping birds.
Farmer A little pretty bonny lass or YouTube SATB
As with the composer's famous 'Fair Phyllis', this lively madrigal is set in the fields. Unusually, the man tells the story about one who got away. It features a rather fresh suitor whose passions reach a climax at a rapid tongue-twisting 'yet still she said I should not' - imitative perhaps of her brusque refusal (although the rejection doesn't seem terribly upsetting!).
Wilbye The Lady Oriana or YouTube SSATTB
Wilbye's style is characterized by delicate voice-writing, acute sensitivity to text and language, a seriousness of approach and a subtlety of musical ideas. He spent much of his life employed as resident musician for a wealthy family of arts patrons in Suffolk, and most of his compositional output is madrigalian.
Tomkins Phyllis now cease or YouTube SSATB
Dedicated 'To Mr Henry Molle'. A 5-part ballet with a sad tinge of false love. Please note that the cpdl edition in the link is a tone lower than our own edition.
